2010 RAMBLINGS

January 2, 2010

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
Welcome back everyone. We hope you all had a very safe and enjoyable weekend while ringing in the old and bringing in the new. It's hard to believe it's the start of a brand new decade. Yes, I know some of the nay-sayers will remark the solar calendar started with year one and thus the decade won't be over for another three-hundred and sixty four days. But it's not just the number that appears to be fresh; it's an overall feeling that things are going to be different. Call me a romantic at heart but I'd like to think yesterday marked the beginning of something grand. Something.... wonderful.
I know. I'm sorry. I couldn't help but sneak that little reference in.
Speaking of which, today we have a picture from a movie almost three years old. It's my fault. Sometimes we've had to remove certain pictures from the Summer Blockbuster Gallery for a variety of reasons be it because someone passed away, it was in poor taste, or just that we unanomously decided it was a terrible picture. We don't often do it because then we have to go back and re-number all the entries preceeding the now deleted drawing. It's a royal pain but we want to make sure if you're looking at entry one-hundred and seven, there's one-hundred and six illustrations before it. And for the most part we've done a bang up job. For the most part.
For some reason we accidentally skipped two entries: one from last year and one way back in 2006. Now granted I could have gone back and renumber everything again to close those two glaring spaces, but instead I thought I owed it to not take the easy way out. And so today we debut the first of two movies homages way beyond over-due; "The Descent". If you think you know how I tackled it, you might be a little surprised. Regardless it's better late than never.
Next week we'll be back to debut the second 'lost' drawing so until then, remember to stay sober and warm. - Jake

January 10, 2010

Welcome back, everyone! I'm sorry for the confusion but we did have an update yesterday. Everything was posted and changed but whether it was my fault or the web server, this particular section of the website didn't get revised. Hopefully most of you were able to deduct what our update was about, but I apologize if that wasn't the case. I myself didn't know about the problem until late in the day when Tony gave me the heads up. You know, it'd be nice if for once I wouldn't have apologize for something! *lol*
But lets get down to business. Today we have the second blockbuster picture we skipped over in the past few years: Will Smith's super-hero action/comedy "Hancock". For the longest time (which in this case would be two years!) we were trying to figure out what we could do with it. The result is something I felt was full of ambition but came up with all sorts of problems. It's not my best work, or even pretty good. But there is a few little things I really like about it. Oh, and I think this is the first entry in the gallery in which we tackled six different movies at one time.
Before I take off, I'd like to thank everyone who writes in to Tony or I telling us what we are and are not doing right and especially love it when we get art from other artists as well. It doesn't happen often but when it does, it knocks our socks off. We absolutely encourage it and we would be honored to post it up on our site. I only bring this up because we've received two pieces of 'art' from fellow artists in the past week who were unclear whether or not that sort of thing was okay. Our feeling is as long as it doesn't contain nasty things like our characters getting murdered, feature copyrighted characters from other medias prominently, or contain subject matter above a "PG-13" rating we usually have no objections about it. So yeah, send that art to us - we appreciate it!
That's all for today. But come back here next Saturday as we begin our 'salvation' to finish up LAST year's gallery. So until then, we hope you're staying warm. It's cold outside!! - Jake

January 23rd, 2010

If you’ll indulge me for a moment, I’m going to go into a little rant. But trust me - this will all tie into today’s update in the end. Promise.
Tony and I often go into the most ridiculous and pointless arguments. Take for example just last week when we were discussing television shows that ended their runs on a cliffhanger. Nothing, and I mean nothing, is more frustrating to a loyal fan of a particular series than to devote years following the cast of characters and the overlaying storyline only to find out in the end that it’s all “to be continued.” Sure, one could get all cerebral and say it’s a matter of art imitating life and that unless the end is death, the journey never really ends.
But if there’s one unspoken law about television shows, it’s that it does have to lead to an end. Even when a show is cancelled, the universe will not rest until the tale is done.
Don’t believe me? Okay. When “Gilligan’s Island” was cancelled, the castaways were still stuck on the island. But six years later they came back in a special when they were rescued by the Harlem Globetrotters. Dr. Bruce Banner was still cursed to walk down gravel roads hitchhiking to ‘Lonely Man’ on “The Incredible Hulk” until a decade later when the Hulk fell out of a plane and died. KITT turbo-boosted into car heaven in “Knight Rider 2000”, Ralph Hickley turned over the super suit to the “Greatest American Heroine” (still without the instruction manual), Sheriff Taylor retired and settled down with a real peach of a woman in “Return to Mayberry”, “The A-Team” stopped running from the government and started working for them instead, the cast of Serenity figured out what was wrong with River while Kaylee finally got some…..
The list goes on and on. If you can think of a television show that ended with questions still remaining, 99.99999% of the time the universe straightened itself out like it always does. And that is why when the freak occurrence of a television show that doesn’t come to its natural conclusion happens, it really pisses everybody off.
For two seasons people were trying to understand just what the hell was going on in David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks”. And for two seasons people endured the frustration of log ladies and apple pies and backwards speaking dwarfs just so they could find out who killed Laura Palmer. Sure, to their credit her killer was revealed (spoilers: it was Daddy!) but then they got too cocky and continued the series with some shenanigans about a beauty pageant, an Owl Cave and a killing entity named Bob. Who was Bob? Where did Bob come from? How can Agent Palmer stop Bob? Well, we never found out because Bob took over Agent Palmer and *CLICK* fade-to-black.
So when news got out David Lynch was going to do a “Twin Peaks” movie, everyone got their hopes up. The answers were going to be revealed after all! But no. David Lynch is a weird cat and instead we got a prequel leading up to Laura Palmer’s death and Chris Issak sauntering down Oregon paths with his baby blues. Fans = anger = hate = torches.
Which brings us to the other serialized series that I can think of where the ending left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth and is related to today’s update (see, I told you this was going somewhere): “Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles.”
You would think the idea of a “Terminator” television show could not fail, and for the first season it didn’t. We were treated to some great action, cool character development, and a female terminator that looked exactly like Summer Glau. Plus best of all: we already knew how the series was going to end! Skynet would become self-aware and humanity would find itself at war with the machines. So it is written; so it will be. It’s fool-proof! But nine months later when the second season began and all that confidence turned into fear. Sure, Shirley Manson as a manipulative T-1000 was awesome, but they started venturing into storylines about 1930’s gangster and Skynet having extra-terrestrial ties. And how did the season/series end? With the teenage John Conner going into the future, post Judgement Day, and having a gun pointed at his face by his future father Kyle Reese. A cliffhanger that not only screws up where the television show was headed, but the first two movies it was based on as well!
Well, I better stop. If you walk away with anything from this, I hope it is this:

1) The mark of a good television show is one that has a definate ending. If it doesn’t, it will go down in history as garbage. This is a proven fact.
2) I watch too much television. This is also a proven fact.
3) Sometimes Tony and I get into the most ridiculous and pointless arguments. And…
4) I’m not as skilled of a web designer that I claim to be so I have to go into a long, trivial rant so the picture I posted doesn’t mess up the layout of the page.

Anyway, today’s Blockbuster Gallery picture is based on “Terminator: Salvation”, McG and Christian Bale’s attempt to revitalize the franchise. While it didn’t get the best of reviews, and Bale’s off-camera outburst at a crew member got more media attention, I give it props for trying. It’s not a bad movie actually and it looks incredible on Blu-Ray.
I just wish they hadn’t ended it on a damn cliffhanger! - Jake

January 30th, 2010

It hasn't been a very good week for Minnesota. As everyone knows, our Vikings didn't make it to the Super Bowl after all. Oh sure, us Minnesotians are still proud of what Favre and the rest of the team did for us this year and because we're "Minnesota Nice", we wished the Saints all our best. It was a good game. A close game. That's how football should be played. Unfortunately we only had two things that got in our way for the win: a bad play by a referee and Prince who felt the need to cash in on the Vikings success by publishing the most femine football song ever composed. You want to know why Favre screwed up that play? Because his IPod was playing Prince's love ballet in his ear. Yes, I've never been a fan of "what funny shape am I going to change my name to today" but if I had a choice between listening to that and attending a Celene Dion concert, I'd sit in with the French Canadian. Shame on you, Prince. Shame on you!
Anyhow, today's blockbuster picture is taking a break from being goofy. It still has a gag in it but for the most part, I was going for something a bit different. My focus was more on the scenery that anything else. So without further ado, we present "Fun With Helium", our little nod to the exceptional Pixar movie "Up"; one of the best movies of last year. Seriously, if you haven't had a chance to see the movie you are really missing out. And if you don't get a little choked up within the first 20 minutes of the film, you're a cold-hearted human being.
Until next week, stay warm (both literally and figuratively)! - Jake

February 13th, 2010

People can attest: I don't handle Valentine's Day very well.
Even though it's a commercial holiday for card stores and candy shops to drive up their revenue, it still irks me. Because no matter how many times I hear people say how unimportant it is, it still doesn't change the fact these same people who are so freely giving me advice already have someone in their lives. And if they don't, they might be single but they're still single with at least some form of experience already behind them. The world sees Cupid's Day as a time to celebrate love and togetherness. Most of the single folks in the world sees it as a day of being lonely. Me? It's one-third loneliness, one-third proving how much of a loser I am, and one-third the universe laughing in my face. So no, I do not like Valentine's Day.
Which is why I'm taking a step back and letting others update the website for me this week. The way I see it, the last thing I want to do is rain on everyone's parade so instead of debuting yet another bitter condensending drawing in honor of February 14th, I'm going to post some upbeat (and let's face it: better illustrated) drawings in synch with a more festive mood. Really, if you can detect the early signs of crabiness in this rambling, I'm sure you'll quickly agree this is a very good idea.
So to take my place is the only person who could perfectly. That's right, "Art by Tony" has a brand new pin-up! It seems a month ago when I was saying what kinds of subject material is and isn't allowed in here, my co-hort saw it as more of a test to see how much he could get away with. The result is a vastly different and more mature take on Erik, Crispie, and Eli called "Rise of Impetus". Now I'll say this right up front: it's definately not in continuity and it might even be NSFW ("Not Safe For Work" for those unfamiliar with the abbreviation) but it's still a really good picture nevertheless. So check it out and be sure to send some feedback his way. Oh, and before anyone gets any bright ideas, this doesn't mean we'll allow pictures of horrid acts of violence from here on out. This is a one-time deal and a chance for Tony to get it out of his system (or least I hope he did.)
Yeah, I'm really starting to get grouchy so I better head off. I apologize for my short temper and hope people honestly do have a great Valentine's Day. Just because I'm down in the dumps doesn't mean anyone else has to be. But before I leave, I just want to give a big shout-out to Matthew Marck for supplying today's sketch which he did at the very last minute. I'm sure I'll be back to my usual cheery self next week so until then, be sure to eat those Sweet Tarts and Bom-Boms in moderation. - Jake

March 7th, 2010

Hey everyone! It's been awhile, hasn't it? Well, it's Tony's fault!
No, I'm kidding. The lack of updates have solely been resting on my shoulders. Even though we're doing much better posting new content up on a more regular basis than the three month gaps we typically do (and I hope I didn't just jinx myself by saying that), the goal has always been weekly updates. Hopefully as all the snow on the ground is beginning to melt and spring is finally coming around, we'll be able to get more on track on these things.
But enough with apologies. Today we have another entry in the long-delayed Blockbuster Gallery; this time based on last year's comedy "The Hangover". And if that wasn't already good, it's done by one of our returning guest artists, Roxi MacDermott! So have yourself a look at the tremendous job she did and hopefully it will be worth the wait.
That's all for now but next time we'll be debuting another PSBG picture (I promise) as well as another edition of the "Letters to Plight Site". So if you have any questions or comments you'd like to make and don't want to wait a long time for a response, send them our way at jake@plightsite.com or crimsonpug@comcast.net and we'll feature them next week. So until then, stay warm! - Jake

March 20th, 2010

I know it's hard to believe, but yes, we actually have an update on a Saturday. And what an update it is! Over at the Summer Blockbuster Gallery page, we shine the spotlight on last year's 'blink and you missed it' period piece,"Public Enemies" starring Johnny Depp in one of his more serious roles and Christian Bale in one of his more low-key performances. Actually I was surprised how quickly it was taken out of the theaters. From what I heard the film is pretty entertaining but for one reason or another it just couldn't sustain a long enough run at the box office. Go figure! Regardless what casted its fate, Tony and I still felt it was good enough to be included in our Summer Blockbuster Gallery list. But is the picture itself any good? Take a look for yourself.
Now that we have taken care of that, it's been far too long since we replied to any e-mails publicly. It'd be nice if our boxes would be flooded with mail, but the reality is we don't get as much feedback as we'd hoped for. But as all things goes, eventually a pile does take share. And when it does, we can present.....

Jake,
Let me ask some questions. Seems to me Plight would translate better as an animated series like HBO/Adult swim. If the property went that route who'd be your ideal voice cast? Also how many hits do you get daily? Love the stuff. Keep it up.
Mark Frechette

Hey Mark! First off I'd like to apologize for taking so long to get back to you on this. Your e-mail has been sitting in both Tony and my inbox for months now and only recently did I remember we never gave you a proper response. Part of the reason is I had to think long and hard about it. But after some inner-reflection, I think I have a cast finally figured out.
For Erik, I couldn't picture somebody that matched the type of voice I think he'd have until I recently saw the movie "Zombieland" and listened to Jesse Eisenberg's monologues. To me, Eisenberg could convey Erik's youthfulness without coming across as being goofy. When he speaks about getting into a fight or sticking to his beliefs, you believe it. Plus it doesn't hurt that Eisenberg has had previous experience in animation.
When it comes to Kari, the one actress who has always seemed her voice would be dead-on would be Scarlett Johannsen. Go ahead and laugh; even I know how odd that pick is. But Johannsen can project being smart, sassy, and taking charge at a moment's notice. When I'm writing her dialogue, it's Johannsen's voice that usually comes out most of the time. An odd pick for sure but it's the one I'm going with.
As for the rest of the cast, and because I could easily turn this into a six-page response, here are just some of my other choices:

Daryl: Alec Baldwin ("30 Rock")
Rahistal: Jeffrey Combs ("The Re-Animator")
Eli: Rosario Dawson ("Men in Black 2")
Crispie: Ron Pearlman ("Hellboy")

The traffic we get on the website seems to average around 30 hits a day. It doesn't seem a lot but when you factor in we're a weekly updated site and not many folks drop in daily, we end up more with an estimated 200 vistors on a regular basis. Of course it's difficult to lock down a precise number, but even if we had half that, it's still 100 folks who think it's worth their time to see what we're up to.
Thanks for writing in. Mark! Tony and I thought you brought up a really interest question.

You should stop using "Hey Everybody" in the beginnings of your entries every single time. It sounds like a lame catch-phrase the wacky neighbor of a sitcom would say. And no offense you don't come across as the wacky neighbor type. In fact don't even use "Hey Everybody". Just start with your dialogue and leave it at that.
Brett Vorderbruggen

Thanks for the suggestion Brett but I personally don't think it's a problem. Maybe I use it more often than I should but it's certainly not every single time. Plus if it comes off sounding like anything from television, I'd point towards Dr. Nick Riviera from "The Simpsons". I'll do my best to spice my ramblings up from here on out but unless there's suddenly a loud outcry from viewers agreeing with you, don't be surprised if I continue greeting folks the same way. Still, I appreciate the critism.

Just dropping a line to the Plight Site gang to say keep up the great work. Continue chasing that dream.
Chris Pabst

Thanks Chris! It's always nice to get encouragement from people. Take it easy!

Hi Jake. I saw your request for letters and thought you would like to hear from me. I started going to your site when you were posting things in jediaayla.com and have been following you ever since. I’m not bothered by your delays because I’ve tried my hand in hosting my own web page and came to the realization it’s too much hard work. I wish you would work on doing a comic book story instead of only doing pin ups because I would like to know more about Erik and Kari. I am a big fan of both of them especially Kari. I like both of their designs and what little characterization you’ve shown of them. Kari seems like she’s smarter than Erik and wouldn’t put up with any of his crap. Erik comes across as a happy go lucky guy who doesn’t realize he’s made a mistake until it’s too late. This is again why I wish you’d do more comics of them. It kind of hurts you when nobody knows much about that.
Getting away from comics for a second you joke you wish more artists would draw something else other than Kari. But I like seeing different artists drawing her. These new pin ups of her were smoking to say the least that I had to make a wallpaper for myself that added them in. I might be opening myself to ridicule but if I can be forthcoming her design is very hot from any picture of her no matter who the artist is. I hope that doesn’t come out sounding weird. I read your mad rants about nude art and I want you to know I don‘t mean it like that. It is a testament to you as a creator and everyone as artists that I like Kari as much as I do. She’s a sexy character with a brash personality.
I can’t think of anything else to write about right now but if it’s all the same to you I’d like to remain in contact. I hope you found this letter well enough to publish. Please edit out anything you’d like. Thank you!
Kevin Braughn

I completely agree there should be more actual comic pages on the website, Kevin. Ever since I came up the idea of Plight, completing the first issue has always been my biggest goal. No joke, I've had the story in my head for close to two decades now. But for some reason or another, every project Tony and I do gets put on hiatus or just forgotten. And you've hit the nail on the head: it's hard for people to understand or even care about the characters if they don't know their backstory or motivations. It's funny but up until recently, Tony and I were wondering if we wanted to do a Summer Blockbuster Gallery again this year because it seems that's what takes up all our time (don't worry everyone, the gallery is going to continue.) Fortunately we've come up with an idea that if we're able to pull it off, it might just free up some time for me to work on some comics. But yes, I think you're right and there should be more comic work in here.
As for being fans of Kari and Erik, I'll let you in on a little secret: even the people who like Kari to an extreme flatter me. You cannot imagine the e-mails I've receive or the pieces of art I've been sent. I guess when you have such a well-endowed character you open yourself up to things like that. But even if it makes me roll my eyes or chuckle, I'm still deeply honored people have such an interest in her they take the time out of their lives to express that. Do I wish those type of folks would keep certain things private from me? Absolutely! But it's gratifying my poorly-drawn art means something to them. So no, there is no way I'd ridicule you when I've been told far, far, FAR worse things.

Where did you get your Rock Band Erik figure? Did you have to order it online or is there a store where you can get them done? I don't have my X-Box hooked up or a gold account so their website can't get the data from my game. And how much did it cost you?
Dan Miller

Hey Dan! I'm afraid the only way you can get your figures is from their website (www.rockband.com). I'm sure you understand why they can't fetch your characters data but unfortunately there isn't an option that allows you to create them on the website itself. As for the price, each figure costs $65 plus shipping and handling. It's a bit steep but I was more than willing to pay that if only just to have a bona-fide Erik mini statue in my hands. My suggestion is if it's still something you're very interested in, your best bet would be finding a friend who is online and have them create a band with your character in it. As soon as Harmonic's servers read that data, you call pull your character from their database and you're all set. I hope I was able to help. Good luck!

Well it's about time to wrap things up. But before we take off, we'd like to hank everyone who sent us e-mails. We appreciate any kind of suggestions, comments, or critisms you might have and you can continue to contact us at jake@plightsite.com or at crimsonpug@comcast.net. Either one of us are happy to get back to you. Next time we'll have another blockbuster picture to yank the drape off and perhaps (perhaps) a little something extra. So until then, be sure to work on your wacky neighbor greetings. - Jake

April 3rd, 2010

Hey everybody! I'm sorry there wasn't an update last week but Tony and I were both really under the weather. I wound up with the worst case of strep throat imaginable, and on top of that, a severe case of exhaustion. Oh, I was a sight to see. Last Saturday alone I was only awake for 20 minutes total and wasn't able to even vocalize any words until three days later. Add to that a burning cough and a fever and you had one very sick comic artist. As for Tony, he was having troubles with his eyes which was making things extremely difficult. Heh. Funny how one of us became blind while the other turned into a mute. But I'm happy to report we've made a some-what complete recovery and able to get on with our lives again.
So let's just get right to it. Today we close the empty spaces in last year's Summer Blockbuster Gallery by one with our homage to "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince". This particular entry was interesting because I tried my hand in a rather strange story-telling technique. Was I able to pull it off or did it wind up flat? Well, that all depends on who you ask. There are definately things about it I liked as well as things (or rather certain people) I had to do my best with. Regardless, click on the link and see what we mean.
We'll be back soon with our next picture to catch up, but in the meantime we hope you all have a very happy and safe holiday weekend; no matter what you believe in. See, we can be equally understanding. - Jake

May 1st, 2010

As long time visitors to this website know, we usually have a problem in early June/late July as that's the time our domain is up for renewal. In the past we've done our best to make sure everything goes as smooth and quickly as possible. But unfortunately sometimes that means the site unexpectedly goes down for a few days or even up to a week. To say it's been a constant thorn in our asses would be an understatement. And every time it's occured, we've always been in the middle of the "Summer Blockbuster Gallery" for that season; causing a big interuption. But I'm happy to say it won't happen this year. Earlier this week I was sent all the materials and I'm pleased to announce the check has cleared and Plightsite.com is locked in for another 12 months of uninterupted service which means we might actual have a summer with no unforseen delays (and notice I said 'unforseen'). It might sound trivial but believe me, this is very good news indeed!
But enough with the business talk; let's get right into the fun stuff. Today we're playing catch-up again with a picture based on the movie "G-Force" which I suspect has already finished its run in the theaters, been released on DVD/Blu-Ray/On Demand, had it's network debut on the Disney Channel, been discounted to 70% on Amazon.com, and may very well have had its copyright reverted to public domain by now. Sure, it's not exactly timely but we are debuting it sooner than Image Comics has taken to release issue # 2 of "Image United" after the first issue came out last June. Kind of puts it in a whole new perspective, doesn't it? Anyhow, click on the link and enjoy a little something I like to call "Death Bedding".
Next week Tony and I will be kicking off the 2010 Summer Blockbuster Gallery with "Iron Man 2". So until then, have fun and enjoy "Free Comic Book Day"! - Jake

May 8th, 2010

Elmer Bernstein is an undisputable legend in movie score composers. In his long career spanning over 200 films, he’s been responsible for the music on such classics as “The Man with the Golden Arm“, “The Magnificent Seven“, “To Kill a Mockingbird“, “True Grit”, and “Cape Fear”. He’s received Grammy nominations, won Tony awards, and garnished a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He’s the one great movie directors such as Martin Scorsese and John Ford would turn to because they knew when you had him, their projects would automatically gain a level of prestige. That is why in 1979, accompanied by the Camp North Star Kids Chorus, he created a masterpiece; a masterpiece with lyrics I feel are quite appropriate for today’s entry.
Ahem.
Are you ready for the summer? Are you ready for the sunshine? Are you ready for the birds and bees and apple trees and a whole lot of fooling around?
That's right; it's once again time for the "Plight Summer Blockbuster Gallery" which is celebrating it's TENTH YEAR!! Honestly, I couldn't imagined a decade ago when Tony and I collaborated on a picture based on "The Mummy Returns" that we'd still be coming up with movie pictures or that it'd become one of the most popular sections of this site. True, some would argue it's the only part of the site that gets updated, but let's not get into that.
Instead we welcome 2010 in right with a picture based on Robert Downey Jr's second foray as Marvel Comics' Armored Avenger in "Iron Man 2". If you click on the link you'll see this particular illustration went through a lot of changes from what the two of us originally thought of. As for what the plan is for the gallery itself, we'll be tackling two to three new movies a month and debuting them on or near their release dates as usual. On the weeks when we'll be taking a break, we'll be posting art from last year's gallery that have yet to be seen. So while we might be spending more time on the pictures, there will still be weekly updates.
Well, that's enough talking from me. Have a safe weekend and be sure to come back in seven days when we set our attention on Gladiat... I mean, "Robin Hood". - Jake

May 15th, 2010

I've been left all alone, here to fend for myself, unable to call for assistance should I require it!! Yes, this is Tony doing an update for the first time in who knows how long, as Jake has decided to go on a spur of the moment trip out of state and away from the internet. Without ME. But enough of that.
We're here at Week Two of the Summer Blockbuster Gallery with a brand new picture based on the Russel Crowe / Ridley Scott epic - Gladiator 2!! ... (ahem - sorry) "Robin Hood"!!. I've already seen this one and it's pretty decent as long as you don't mind a severe lack of Robin Hood in your Robin Hood movies.
That's it for now. Come on back in a week or two as we unveil another new picture based on an upcoming Blockbuster. But for now - Happy Trails! - Tony

May 22nd, 2010

Greetings and salutations everyone! I'm sorry for not being around last week but as Tony mentioned, I had to go out of the state unexpectedly. Fortunately I'm back now and grateful my buddy was able cover for me at the last minute. It probably wouldn't have looked good for us had there been no update so soon in this year’s gallery. But Tony came through like I knew he would and I can’t thank him enough.
Anyhow, while we’re not covering any movies that premiere this weekend (because after three attempts we’ll be dammed if we cover anything remotely similar to “Shrek“ anymore), we do have an update to the Summer Blockbuster Gallery. Strangely enough, it’s based on a film that debuted in theaters exactly one year ago today. What’s more eerie is the movie just happen to be “Year One”. But wait: the odd connections don’t end there! Today’s picture also ties into a little known fact about one of our main characters and is done by one of our returning guest artist. This artist I speak of has built quite a gallery of pin-ups done with a specific theme in mind: one that is based on a popular comic book character who’s the reason there’s a little known fact about one of our main characters in the first place. Follow that? Well, it’s okay if you don’t. Just click on the link and all will be explained.
Next week Tony and I will be back on art duties as we tackle “Prince of Persia: Sands of Time”. So until then! - Jake

What a beautiful day outside - the sun is shining, the heat is on, and the end of the school year is in the sights of millions of kids around the Nation. If that isn't a sure sign of Summer than what is? Oh! How about yet ANOTHER new picture in our Summer Blockbuster Gallery!!
This week we have a continuation of sorts of one of our longest running jokes, and one of my personal favorite jokes at that, with a new picture for the latest Disney/Bruckheimer flick "Prince of Persia"! So head on over to our Summer Blockbuster Gallery Index Page and check out the new pin-up.
But that isn't the ONLY new thing we have here this week. A few of you may have noticed the link on the main image page, but we are officially opening up our new Official Plight Site Facebook Page today! We feel that with a Facebook page our fans will be able to provide us with more feedback quicker, and Jake and I will be able to keep people updated more frequently with how we are doing and what current projects are being worked on. We'll also have pics posted there as they debut here, and with the comments section all of you will finally be able to quickly tell us what you think. It is still a work in progress but we welcome all the fans we can get. So please surf over to the Facebook page and become a fan! Jake and I really appreciate it.
Tune back here next week for the latest SBG pic. Until then - have a great week everyone! - Tony

June 12th, 2010

What's up, everybody? We hope you're enjoying the summer so far: whether it's going on vacations, being out of school, relaxing at the beach.... whatever it is you do to unwind. For us at Plightsite headquarters we're slipping in every free moment we can to soak it up but so far all it's been is rain, clouds, and more rain. Pretty soon though we're bound to hit a nice stretch. So until then we have not one but TWO entries in the "Summer Blockbuster Gallery. That's right. Even though we didn't have an update last week, we wanted to make it up.
First up for your viewing entertainment is our take on the Adrian Brody horror film, "Splice"; a movie so terrible it's bound to air on the SyFy Channel by the time August comes around. Oh, I could harp on the star of "The Pianist" and "King Kong" as well but Brody's also going to be starring in the upcoming "Predators" so the man, at least in my opinion, comes out of this with his dignity intact. Seriously - have you watched the trailer? Bad ass!
And speaking of bad ass, we also have an homage to "The A-Team", a film based on the 'It's so dumb it's enjoyable' television show from the '80s. I remember watching the show growing up and thinking even back then how ridiculous it was. But that was the beauty of it and I soaked in every second of it.
Anyhow, that's it for now. Come back next week when we'll be featuring the film adaptation of "Jonah Hex". Until then! - Jake

June 26th, 2010

Last night sucked.
Early in the evening parts of the Twin Cities were hit by a very severe thunderstorm. It was pretty bad so much so that areas of Minneapolis experienced flooding. As for auto accidents, I can personally account for two of them which happened on the road outside my apartment. Of course it was hard to be a witness when the rains were so thick it was barely visible not to mention the power for the entire block being knocked out.
I hate being in a power outage; especially when before it happened I was busy trying to finish up the blockbuster gallery picture for "Toy Story 3". I was sitting at my table pushing myself to wrap it up when the lights began to flicker. Fortunately I was able to save my progress and turn my computer off before something bad happened. And as it turns out, something probably would have happened.
If you'll permit me to vent for a second about something non-comic related, I was getting all my important things unplugged when I saw my X-Box 360 spark inside my television cabnet. The unit was turned off but as if a firecracker had lit inside it, I saw a flash and then my apartment went completely black. It wasn't until three hours later when the electricity came back on that my suspicions had been confirmed: my X-Box 360 got fried. Even though I was able to turn the machine on, 1 red light in the upper right hand side kept flashing and my memory card (which had my profile on it) wouldn't register. It wouldn't pick up any of my wired and wireless controllers (except for my Guitar Hero 2 guitar) nor would it power my wireless adapter unless I plugged it into one of the front USB slots. And the icing on the cake? All my game saves were now labelled as 'Unknown User'. Granted I was planning on buying the X-Box 360 slim anyhow but now it appears it'll definately be an expense from my next paycheck.
So yes, I think if I hadn't turned my computer off when I did, I'd be sitting here with much bigger problems than announcing the "Toy Story 3" picture will unfortunately be delayed just a little bit longer. I hope everyone understands but it's so late in the evening as I type this and I've spent so much energy trying to revive my gaming console (sadly, this will have been my fifth 360 due to 'Red Rings of Death') that all I want to do at this point is just go to bed.
Of course before I do that, I'm pleased to announce that we DO have a update today! As if he wasn't drawing enough, Tony decided to secretly work on a picture based on the biggest bomb of this movie season so far: "MacGruber". Now I haven't seen the film but taking into account all the terrible reviews I've read, I don't think Tony's joke is too far off the mark. So be sure to click on the link and enjoy!
Next week we will absolutely be debuting the "Toy Story 3" picture as well as possibly risking our lives poking fun at "The Twilight Saga" (because all the female members of the Larson household are big fans and we might get on their bad sides). So until then, may your skies be sunny and your game consoles never attempt to blow up. - Jake

Thanks to Mark Frechette for the funny (yet painfully true) Samuel L. Jackson mock-up.

July 10th, 2010

You'll have to excuse us for posting this update a little later into the day they we normally do. I'm in the middle of a two-week vacation and while I've been having fun and trying to get my head straightened out, I've also been reacquainted with something I thought was only a myth: a little activity called 'sleeping in'. And I've got to tell you, it feels weird having just woken up and the clock reading 11:48 AM. But damn, do I feel refreshed!
Anyhow, I'm going to keep this short because while I'm on vacation, I'd rather spend the rest of the day catching up on all the various projects I've yet to complete such as assembling the still delayed "Toy Story 3" picture, pencilling next week's illustration, finishing off the last request illustration from a few years ago that someone recently reminded me was never finished, etc, etc...
So for today's entry in the Summer Blockbuster Gallery, we journey to a movie theater in Forks, Washington as a couple of moviegoers make a comment about another group. We call it "Vampires Don't Sparkle!" and it's based, of course, on that popular series of Stephenie Meyer novels turned into world-wide phenomonon, "Twilight". So click on the link and we hope you enjoy it (and still enjoy it if you decide to read one kill-joy of a rambling by one of the artists afterwards. Seriously - who did a #2 in his cereal?)
Next week we'll have another update; possibly two. If I really get inspired, three. So until then, go TEAM JACOB! - Jake

July 24th, 2010

Hey there! I'm afraid there isn't an update today so if that's all you were interested in, I apologize. We will have something up as soon as we can. But for those of you wondering the reasons for the delays, please read on.
Twenty-one days ago I said we'd have some new art to debut. Obviously I spoke too early. Instead of catching up and regaining a normal schedule, we fell behind. I wish I could say that's because Tony and I were lucky enough to go the San Diego Comic Con this weekend (it seems everyone with any sort of link to comics is using that excuse) but the truth of the matter is the delays and lack of updates is because of me. I won't go into too much details about the things going on in my personal life, but I will share with you one of the obsticles getting in the way of my productivity.
Recently my car broke down and while I'm waiting for a special part to arrive to the service garage any day now, I've had to walk to and from work. That's a problem because the hospital is about four miles away from where I live and the weather lately has been, on average, in the mid 80s. So after a long day of walking to work, being on my feet practically my entire shift, and then having to go home the same way, by the time I reach my apartment I'm exhausted, aching, and practically dehydrated to do anything other than collapse into bed. Granted this is only been a problem for a week now and it doesn't explain the lack of updates from the previous weeks. But like I said, there's things going on in my personal life and my lack of transportation is just one of them.
That's not to say I haven't been working on anything. I'm still putting the finishing touches up on our homage to "Toy Story 3" and right now I'm in the middle of pencilling a illustration for "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" that Tony will be inking and coloring. It's just I've had to twiddle on them in spurts when I have the energy in me; which unfortunately isn't as often as I'd like. The good news is as soon as something is finished, I will posting it immediately; regardless if it's Saturday or not. And aside from an act of God, I'm fairly certain at the very most we'll have something to debut by next Saturday. So really, this drought of material is almost at an end.
Thank you all for your understanding while I try to get better and I'm sure I'll be talking to you sooner than later! - Jake

August 6th, 2010

While most would call it laziness, I think a very rare opportunity has just presented itself.
It's 11:00 PM, Friday night as I write this and I've just gone ahead putting together everything I've done thus far into a temporary "Toy Story 3" picture. I say temporary because some problems came up and a few characters such as Ekylpse, Yin, Ernest Borgnine, and the Caretaker from 'Sofa Kingdom' weren't jiving to be included into the picture properly. So instead of delaying it for yet another week, my original plan was to assemble what was working and tell all of you that the finalized version will be posted next time.
But then an idea hit me.
I know some folks who visit us say they'd like to contribute but they just can't draw. Well, here's a chance for all you non-artists to have a hand into shaping the next blockbuster gallery pic. The proposal is simple: from now until Wednesday night if you have an idea for any of our original characters that haven't been used yet (this includes the ones I mentioned above) as a certain brand of toy, write in and suggest it. The best ideas we get might just make it into the illustration. And if we pick your idea, I'll agree to draw a sketch of any character of your chosing; Plight-related or not (gee, aren't I suddenly full of myself?). But you have until 12:01 Wednesday to enter.
Speaking of viewer participation, next time we'll also be posting the newest batch of e-mails we've collected since March so if you have any comments, questions, critisms and would like them answered in a timely manner, now would be a great time to drop Tony or myself a line so that we can include it along with the others.
Thank you all for tolerating our recent delays while we take care of business in our personal lives. I know things happen and I appreciate the support. Next time we will absolutely, completely, no doubts about it, have a full genuine update with a finalized picture. So until then, stay cool! - Jake

September 4th, 2010

For millions of children across the nation, this weekend signals a real major bummer: the end of summer vacation. Unfortunately (if they haven't already) they're going to be finding themselves back sitting at a desk. Some will be happy to be returning; others not so much. But I suspect deep down every child is going to be wishing they had a time machine and were able to go back to day in late May or June when their freedom was right in front of them. Funny thing is, even though I graduated years ago - I'm kind of wishing the same thing.
See, I'd love to go back to early May when the Summer Blockbuster Gallery was just starting up again. Tony and I had settled on a plan which didn't involve being so bombarded with movies to cover this year, but at the same time, allowed us to post more things as well. Oh how I'd love to go back in time and warn our younger, more naive selves of the problems we were setting ourselves up with. Given the chance I'd kick myself in the ass for spending too much time on a picture for "Jonah Hex" that never got used in the first place (although it did seem to exist longer than the movie did in the box office). What I wouldn't give to have discovered it was "Splice" not "Splicers" sooner. Forget putting "Marmaduke" on the schedule; there's this little film called "Inseption" that we might enjoy covering instead. But most of all, I would have given myself a heads-up that my car was going to crap out of me and drain me of all my creative energies for the rest of the summer.
Why hasn't there been regular updates? Because it took me a long time to get used to routine exercise. After spending ten and a half hours constantly on my feet, two of them walking, by the time I got home all I wanted was to lay on the couch and pass out. Fortunately I've started to get back into the swing of things and the artistic bug has come back. Oh, this is still going to be an issue; I'm sure there'll be days when as soon as I put my key into my apartment's door I'll be finding myself in bed. But I've gotten into a pattern on those days when I do have enough juice left in me. As long as I continue that, there will be more frequent updates from here on out.
Anyway, this week we have a new name joining the ranks of the guest artists who have graced us over the years with pieces featuring our cast. His name is Steven Sanchez and while he might not sound familiar, if you've ever browsed around any art sites, odds are you've come across some of his work. He is a very talented artist and needless to say I was thrilled to have him do a pencilled rendition of Kari. So do yourself a favor and be sure to check it out.
We'll be back next week so until then we hope you all have a fantastic Labor Day weekend! And for you students out there, may you all have a really great school year! - Jake

October 16th, 2010

I wonder who the comic book equvilent of the Soup Nazi from "Seinfeld" is. It'd have to be a stern little man behind a store counter whose first language isn't English (perhaps Japanese? Manga is huge over there as it is over here). Also it'd have to be someone I wouldn't be able to dispute. Yeah, it'd have to be someone like the Soup Nazi only instead of "No soup for you!", he'd bark at me "No con for you!"
It's been years since I've been to a convention; a real convention. A few years ago Tony and I went to the Minneapolis Fallcon but that was the year everything was drastically cut and the dealer ratio far overweighed the guest professionals list. Now don't get me wrong, it was a still fun time. Witnessing Tony's son quickly snatch a Ben10 patch for free and run off rather than speak to the guy handing it to him who just happened to be co-creator Dwyne McDuffie was worth the trip alone. But it wasn't like some of the other comic conventions I've been to in the past.
Before Fallcon '08, there was Chicago Wizard World 2003; back when it was about comics and there were tons of famous creators to meet. Where there were cool Q&A panels to go to all day and D-list celebrities you could either greatly admire (Thomas Jane is a national treasure) or laugh behind their backs (oh Gil Gerard, what happened to you?). Those were the kinds of conventions I've missed. Real conventions that wear you out because you're having so much fun.
So ever since Wizard World 2003, I've done my best to try to go back. Unfortunately something has always come up. I wanted to go to last year's C2E2 but my car broke down weeks before. I tried to go to last year's Fallcon after hearing the program's administators restructured it back into something special but I was extremely sick. I bought tickets to Wizard World 2008 but didn't attend because I was too desperate wanting a girlfriend more. Actually that was a blessing in disguise because as most folks know, that's when the Wizard World really began to suck. And while Tony and I dreamt of hitting San Diego last summer, all that came of our planning was just that: a dream. I accepted all of these things and I've learned to be patient. After all, at the very least I could definately go to this year's Fallcon. With my work schedule I always have the weekends off so it'd be perfect. And even if my car broke down (which it did), I still know I could get to the Robinsdale Transit Station to hop on Route 14E at 7:05 and make it down to Snelling Avenue by the time the conventions gates opened at 10 AM.
Stupid, stupid me.
Recently work changed my hours without my consent. Some bad stuff came down that I wasn't responsible for, but nevertheless I was made to be the accomidating one. Now I'm working every other weekend and as it so happens, that shift starts today. In fact, as I write this the convention is in full swing and I'm sitting here cursing under my breath.
No con for me. Again.
But if there's one positive aspect to me missing out and having to go back to my old SPD position it's the fact I have a lot more energy now than I did serving as an O.R. Tech. I don't know what it is about assisting surgeries but it practically runs you ragged. I always thought I was so tired because I was walking to and from work. As soon as I stepped into my apartment I just wanted to crash instead of picking up a pencil. Now I see that's not the case. If you need proof, ask yourself when was the last time I typed a rambling this long!
But enough of me chatting your ears off. Today we have one and a half new pictures to debut. I say half because as most of you have already guessed, the "Toy Story 3" homage was never fully completed. I could place the blame on the fact we made a contest out of what kind of toys some of our visitors would like to see us add into it but the bottom line is my perfectionism got in the way; as I explain more in the drawing's description. However I would like to thank Mark, Greg, and Peter for submitting their ideas and I'll be sure to have their requests done pretty soon. Thanks guys!
Our other picture was sent to me as a complete surprise. After last month's nifty pencil drawing of Kari, Steven Sanchez decided to do up another picture of our residential heroine. I thought the first one he did was great; this one is even better. But that's my opinion. What you really should do is check it out for yourself. I promise you won't be sorry.
Well, my break is almost over and I have to get back to cleaning blood off of medium carmalts and kidney basins. But we hope to see all of you back here next time where we'll have reveal this year's Halloween pic! So until then hope you're all having a great day (unless you're at Fallcon. To you people I just hope you realize how lucky you are.) - Jake

October 31st, 2010

HAPPY HALLOWEEN, EVERYONE!
You'll have to excuse us a little; or rather me. You see, even though my full-time job at the hospital is settling down, I'm still trying to get back to a normal routine where I'm able to draw as often as I'd like. That's not meant to be an excuse because I certainly spend more than enough time on the X-Box 360 (and yes, I realize that is a documented excuse in the comic book field humorously called the "Madureira Syndrome"). No, it's only a problem organizing myself plain and simple. So please bear with us while we... or rather I, get our act together.
But as I said, today is All Hallows Eve and in the spirit of the holiday we have a new Halloween pin-up entitled "The Mother Load" done up by yours truly. Surprisenly it's been six years since I last honored October 31st so it's been long overdue. Now I'll admit it didn't come out perfectly as planned (I'm still getting the kinks out) but it certainly isn't my worst. So be sure to take a look at it and let us know what you think.
That's it for today but be sure to stop in next time where the plan is for us to twiddle the number of long delayed Summer Blockbuster Gallery pictures down some more. So until then be sure to be safe tonight and above all, have fun screwing up all that work the dentist put in fixing your teeth! - Jake

December 25th, 2010

Seasons greetings everyone! As you can see, I'm still trying to get my act together... two months later. There's been some distractions along the way but in no way is that meant as an excuse. Actually there's no excuse except life is still being unpredictable. It's my hope things will settle down so I can focus a little more. Will it? Who knows but I can tell you this: I wish the Magic-8 ball would give me a "All Signs Point to Yes" fortune rather than "Outlook Unclear".
But bah, this is not the time of year for mystic arts! No my friends, it's Christmas! And we celebrate the season like we always have on this website with our annual tradition of Erik showing a little leg; this time being attacked by a polar bear. If you would like to know more on my feelings towards this year's entry, feel free to click on the picture. But I will say it was a blast to come up with this idea.
And speaking of holiday traditions, once more I was lucky enough to be included on Pat Loika's sketch card list. This year he was kind enough to send me a depiction of Nick Fury with a B.F.G. Now instead of gushing on about the man's generousity like I always do, instead allow me to direct you towards his website "Patloika.com" where you'll be able to read his blog, view his gallery, or listen to the latest episode of his comic podcast. It's some pretty great stuff from a really great guy.
Well that's all for today, and most likely, for this remainder of this year. But we shall return, and I can guarantee much sooner than before. So from all of us here at Plightsite.com, we hope you all have a safe and joyous holiday season. Thanks for all the support you've given us! - Jake
