"Alien Attack" ("Evolution")
After a rough start, our third homage based on the film "Evolution", went much better.
My initial idea was to have Erik fight all sorts of alien bugs and quip something like "I'm gonna go Corporal Hicks on your ass!" But just as I was about to sit at my desk and begin working, a familiar movie came on the television: "Laserblast" starring Roddy McDowell. Instantly, I was inspired by the stupid Claymation aliens and within an hour and a half, I had a finished piece.
Although the background effect came out great, I'm sure I grabbed it somewhere on the internet because Photoshop was still a new venture for Tony and me. We were in our infant stages of learning how to utilize the program, so I highly doubt I created something visually interesting this early on. That aside, I think I handled the aliens' expressions well enough. Likewise, how all three characters are posed. In the case of Erik, I was glad I chose not to add his gloves since otherwise it would have bleed in with the red color on the guns. Same with having his hair in mid-action and resulting in seeing both of his eyes (gasp!)
Oh, who am I kidding? If it wasn't for that trippy background this would have turned out a lousy picture.
Eleven years later I did a follow-up to this piece mocking my terrible artistic inexperience with an illustration based on "Men in Black 3". - Jake
